A day in Baltimore , October, 2004

I flew into Baltimore Saturday morning, to a rainy dawn. By the time I took the light rail into the city, the rain had stopped. Three thousand five hundred miles away, but what would you change if you could?
Nevermore! I walked to the grave of Edgar Allan Poe, in a church courtyard.

M&T Bank Stadium Baltimore is still home to the Ravens.
I walked around the city more, aiming to get to the aquarium as it opened.

Across the harbor
This looks amazingly dreary - in person it was much nicer.
Aquarium

The National Aquarium in Baltimore.

Below, a view from Federal Hill Park.

That's not even the first giant hand I've seen this year. A big shiny hand
I enjoyed walking around the harbor area, although I didn't have time to go to any of the boats or other attractions around there. A German frigate was offering tours, but not until later in the day.

With a bunch of screaming kids and Red Sox fans I explored the Aquarium for more than an hour, but I didn't stay for the dolphin show.
A whale skeleton suspend from the ceiling
Lots of rays and sharks in that tank
Another view of the whale

One of the more subtle applications of bright blue neon I've seen. Still, it's huge bright blue neon.

  Fish
Mmmm... chemistry

My chemist friends have often told me that being a chemist is defined by mixing and pouring.

Those chemists sure are serious about their pouring.

  Assorted sealife
A big rain forest fish
Not just fish! Colorful frogs
Stacked up tanks and visitors
Holocaust Memorial

The tower in the distance is a monument to George Washington, which my guidebook suggested had a great view at the top. However, all the gates around it looked like they had been locked for some time.

The terrorists have already won!

Washington Monument
Babe Ruth museum I didn't go into the museum, but Babe Ruth was born around here.
I headed to Oriole Park at Camden Yards for the first game of an Orioles/Red Sox doubleheader.
Oriole Park at Camden Yards The stadium was great - I'd estimate that I, 28,000 Red Sox fans, 10,000 Orioles fans, and 10,000 people disguised as empty seats enjoyed the 7-5 Red Sox win.
Setting up batting practice

I took the light rail back to the airport and came home.
